What to bring

When planning an excursion to the Parc national des Pingualuit, the following equipment is recommended, taking into account of course your planned level of autonomy.

Safety equipment

  • GPS(strongly recommended), compass, satellite telephone (optional).
  • Signal flare, distress signalling device (optional).
  • Animal deterrents (ex.: noise-making devices, pepper spray, Bearbanger).
  • First-aid and survival kits.
  • Map of the area with landmarks, access routes and camps indicated.

Shelter

  • Tent that is able to withstand strong winds and ground sheet.
  • Sleeping bag: three-season bag (in summer) and winter bag (from October to May).
  • Camping mattress.

Food

  • Dehydrated food and extra food in case of transportation delays or poor weather.
  • Camp stove and fuel

Personal effects

  • Specialized equipment or tools according to the planned activities.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent or mosquito netting.
  • Rain gear, parka, fleece jacket, quick-dry pants.
  • Spare warm clothing in bright colours, mittens, tuque.
  • Trekking poles (2), sturdy water-proof non-slip hiking boots, gaiters.
  • Toilet gear (odourless and biodegradable).

Other requirements and considerations

  • Registration at the park reception centre in Kangiqsujuaq is mandatory on arrival and on departure. Arrival registration includes a mandatory information session.
  • Park staff must be advised of all itinerary changes.
  • Do not feed or attempt to attract wildlife.
  • With the proper licences, both catch-and-release and on-site consumption sport fishing are permitted in the park.
  • Firearms are prohibited in national parks. Only beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement are entitled to carry firearms and to hunt in parks in Nunavik.
  • Pepper spray, noise-making devices and camp stove fuel are dangerous goods and may not be transported on aircraft.
